Allergy Treatment

There is a study about exposing children with peanut allergies to a carefully administered daily oral dose of peanuts helped them build tolerance to the point where some of them appear to have lost their allergies. However, Duke University Medical Center and Arkansas Children’s Hospital cautioned that this approach is still experimental.

Dr. Wesley Burks, chief of the division of pediatric allergy and immunology at Duke and a co-author of the research stated, “This is not something to be done at home. It truly is an investigational study.” Burks and his colleagues were expected to present their findings Sunday at the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy & Immunology meeting, in Washington, D.C where about four million American have allergies to foods, and tree nut allergies, including peanut allergies, are the most common. Nearly half of the 150 deaths attributed to food allergies each year are caused by peanut allergies, according to background information in the study. Sicherer, the chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Section on Allergy and Immunology said, “I think this is very promising, the results.” I hope this research bring a good result at the end.

  1. I’ve heard about this before… but yeah, never try it at home. I’ve always heard never give a child under 3 peanuts anyway, and when the time is ready give them only a little to see how they react.
